Dynamic compliance, lifelong curiosity, and the value of doing things the right way

For some, compliance is perceived as rule-following in its most rigid form. For Pooja Thakkar, Consultant at RQC Group, it is anything but. Her approach is rooted in curiosity, adaptability and clarity of purpose – shaped by over a decade working across two of the world’s largest financial markets.

Pooja joined RQC after moving to the UK from Mumbai in 2023. She now plays a core role in monitoring and supervising Authorised Representatives on Robert Quinn Advisory’s regulatory hosting platform, helping ensure they operate within FCA requirements while maintaining strong governance and internal controls.

“Our work allows clients to concentrate on running their business,” she explains. “We look after the regulatory obligations so they can focus on growth, strategy and execution.”

From Mumbai to London: a cross-market career

Before relocating, Pooja began her career in MCX Stock Exchange of India Limited as a trainee in their inspection department.  She later progressed to roles at Motilal Oswal Asset Management Company Limited  and L&T Investment Management Limited and, after arriving in the UK, worked at ACA Mirabella for Appointed Representatives, Alternative Investment Funds and MiFID investment firms.

Despite the geographical change, she sees more similarities than differences. “Compliance frameworks differ in terminology and implementation, but the underlying purpose is the same: to protect investors and maintain trust. Whether it’s mutual funds in India or private equity in London, the principles remain consistent.”

Having experienced both developing and mature regulatory environments, she has a clear view on the pace of change. “Regulation is always evolving – that’s what makes the field so dynamic. Firms need to be agile enough to integrate new requirements smoothly, without disrupting day-to-day operations.”

Compliance as a value driver – not a barrier

The misconception that compliance is monotonous is something Pooja challenges often. “It’s extremely dynamic. Regulations shift, business models evolve, and every client operates differently. You need analytical thinking, attention to detail and adaptability. If you approach compliance with a learning mindset, you realise it’s one of the most engaging areas of financial services.”

To Pooja, the role goes far beyond meeting regulatory minimums:

“Compliance is not only about satisfying the regulator. It’s about building trust. When firms embed compliance, they reduce risk, strengthen their reputation and create long-term value. It’s how you show clients and the market that you stand for integrity.”

Her guiding principle reflects this mindset: “Compliance isn’t about saying no – it’s about finding the right way to say yes.” That, she believes, is where consultants create real impact: balancing commercial goals with regulatory expectations in a way that is both practical and responsible.

A commitment to personal and professional growth

What keeps Pooja motivated is problem-solving. “If a client has an issue, it means I have an opportunity to help and learn. The challenges are what make the work meaningful.”

Looking back, the advice she would give her younger self is simple: read more and stay curious. “The regulatory landscape never stands still. The more you stay open to learning, the stronger and more confident you become.”

Life beyond the office

Outside RQC, Pooja volunteers at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Neasden – otherwise known as the Neasden Temple – supporting youth community activities. She also enjoys trekking, swimming and exploring London on foot.

“Giving back keeps me grounded,” she says. “It reminds me that the work we do is ultimately about people.”

In a field often defined by rules, Pooja is a reminder that compliance is just as much about mindset – thoughtful judgement, curiosity and doing the right thing – as it is about regulation.
